Revision lessons lose the room in the first ten minutes, and usually for structural reasons rather than motivational ones. Six changes that keep thirty students actually answering.

Revision lessons have a particular failure mode. The first ten minutes go well, then the students who already know the material get bored, the students who do not know it go quiet, and you end up teaching the four in the middle who are still visibly with you.
That is not a motivation problem, and telling the class this will be on the exam does not fix it. It is structural. Most revision formats reward the fastest hand and let everyone else opt out without it being obvious.
Here is what actually changes the shape of the room.
The single biggest change. In a hands-up format, one student answers and twenty-nine watch, so you get one data point per question and the rest of the class practises waiting.
Any format where all thirty commit to an answer at the same time inverts that. You get thirty data points, and more importantly each student has to decide, which is the actual retrieval practice. Mini whiteboards do this. So does any device-based tool. The technology is not the point; the simultaneity is.
A right answer from a student who guessed and a right answer from a student who knew look identical on your mark sheet and mean completely different things.
If you can capture confidence alongside the answer, even crudely, the picture changes. High confidence and wrong is the most valuable signal in the room: that is a misconception, not a gap, and it will survive being re-taught unless you address the belief underneath it. Low confidence and right means the knowledge is fragile and needs another pass.
If you have no way to capture confidence, ask for a show of fists: one finger for a guess, five for certain. It takes four seconds and tells you whether to move on or stop.
Distractors written to be obviously wrong teach nothing. A student who eliminates three silly options and picks the survivor has practised elimination, not the content.
Write each wrong answer as a specific mistake you have actually seen. The student who forgot to convert units. The one who used the wrong formula. The one who reversed cause and effect. Then the distribution of wrong answers tells you exactly which misconception is in the room, and you can teach into it rather than re-explaining the whole topic.
When you show the correct answer immediately, students file it and stop thinking. When you show the distribution first, that eleven of them chose B and nine chose C, the room gets interested in its own disagreement.
Then ask someone from each camp to explain their reasoning before you say who is right. That thirty seconds of justification does more for retention than the correct answer alone, because a student has to reconstruct their thinking rather than just receive a verdict.
Thirty minutes of the same question format is thirty minutes of the same cognitive task, and attention decays regardless of the content. Change the shape of the activity every eight to ten minutes: a quick-fire round, then something where they order or rank things, then a task where they have to produce an answer rather than choose one.
The switch itself is what resets attention. It does not need to be elaborate.
In a hands-up room the same six students answer everything, and the class learns who the clever ones are supposed to be. That is a social fact, and it is very hard to undo once it has set.
Simultaneous answering breaks it quietly. When results come back as a distribution rather than as a sequence of individuals, a student who never volunteers can be right without having to perform being right in front of everyone. Over a term this changes who is willing to try.
Do not redesign your whole scheme of work. Take one revision lesson you already have and change two things: make everyone answer every question, and write the distractors as real misconceptions.
That alone will tell you more about what your class actually knows than the last three revision lessons combined, and you will have the evidence to decide what to reteach rather than guessing.
