Sequence Recall

Pads flash a growing sequence and players repeat it from memory. How to set up Sequence Recall.

Sequence Recall is a memory-and-repeat activity, in the spirit of the classic Simon game. A board of coloured pads flashes a sequence, the flashing stops, and players have to tap the pads back in the same order from memory. Each level adds one more step, so it gets steadily harder. It's quick, playful, and works well as an energiser or a focus round.

How players experience it

  1. The player taps Start (or Ready on later levels) when they're set.
  2. The pads flash a sequence one at a time, and the status line counts the steps as they go.
  3. The flashing stops and it's the player's turn: they tap the pads back in order.
  4. As soon as they either complete the sequence or tap a wrong pad, the level is submitted. They see "Perfect recall!" or "Missed at step N", plus any points earned.
  5. They move on to the next level, where the sequence is one step longer. After the last level, a recap shows how each level went.

Players get one attempt per level, and sequences start at three steps and grow by one each level. Scoring rewards how much of the sequence you get right. You earn partial credit for the correct run of pads before any mistake, so getting further always counts. When the activity is timed, a speed bonus is added on top, so the fastest perfect recalls score the most.

Setting one up as a host

There are no questions to write. The sequences are generated for you. You just tune the difficulty:

  • Pads. Choose 4, 6, or 9 pads. More pads means more to keep track of, so harder recall. The preview is exactly the board players will see.
  • Levels. Pick 3, 5, or 8 rounds. Sequences start three long and grow by one each level.
  • Speed. Relaxed, Normal, or Fast, which sets how long each pad lights up during the flash. Faster flashes are harder to follow.

Fresh random sequences are rolled automatically every time the board is played, so replays stay fair without any extra work from you.

Tips

  • Start gentle. Four pads at Relaxed or Normal speed lets everyone get the hang of it before you crank up the challenge.
  • Fewer, well-chosen settings beat a marathon. A short run of levels keeps the energy high.
  • Great as a warm-up or a palate cleanser between heavier activities like quizzes.

If you're not sure where to start, add a Sequence Recall with 4 pads, 5 levels, and Normal speed. That's a friendly default that still gets challenging by the final level.
